Former F1 Driver Hails Williams’ ‘Fortunate’ Signing of Carlos Sainz

Carlos Sainz was left without a drive after it was announced Lewis Hamilton would be joining Ferrari, pushing the Spaniard out. After months of talking with multiple teams, Sainz announced he would sign for Williams last July.

The multiple race winner will team up with Alex Albon as Williams team principal James Vowles looks to bring the glory days back to the Oxfordshire-based team. Former Formula 1 driver Anthony Davidson believes the signing of Sainz is “remarkable“.

Carlos Sainz arrival a “blessing” for Williams

Carlos Sainz arrives at Williams after a successful stint at Ferrari. He recorded four wins and 25 podiums for the Scuderia. His move to Williams felt like a coup for James Vowles as Williams look to progress up the field. Former F1 driver Anthony Davidson is excited at what Sainz can bring to Williams.

Speaking exclusively to RacingNews 365, Sky Sports pundit Davidson said: “I think Williams can’t quite believe their luck in how they’ve ended up with Carlos Sainz. He’s such a formidable driver that actually, the combination of Sainz and Alex Albon pits them as one of the best driver line-ups on the grid.”

It is remarkable and I’m really looking forward to seeing what Sainz can do there at Williams. It is certainly something that Williams feels like they’ve had a blessing.”

Williams have endured a torrid few seasons where they have mainly been at the rear of the grid. Since Vowells came in, Williams have started to improve. The signing of Sainz is another feather in the cap as they aim to push forward up the grid. After a positive pre-season test, Williams could even be at the top of the midfield.

What will Carlos Sainz bring to Williams?

Carlos Sainz is a competitive Formula 1 racer. In his early days at Toro Rosso when he partnered with Max Verstappen, the 30-year-old held his own. This was a major feat for the Spaniard as Verstappen normally dominates his teammates. It shows Carlos has the skills to make it in the sport at the highest level.

The four-time race winner has developed a reputation for improving every team he has joined. Ferrari were in a slump and uncompetitive before Sainz joined in 2021. He also helped McLaren start to make gains before he left the Woking-based team. This could be an asset for Williams’ progression.

A Deep Look Into Carlos Sainz New Contract With Williams Racing

Sainz was a wealth of experience fighting at the front of the field. This experience could be invaluable to Williams who aims to fight for championships. They will need race winners to make that step. Sainz has battled with the best drivers in the sport and held his own. With the new 2026 regulations coming in and engineers like Pat Fry on the team, Williams could be entering an exciting part of their history.
