Sergio Perez spent seven years with the team, then known as Racing Point. During his time with the Silverstone-based team, the Mexican secured seven podiums, including his first F1 career win at the 2020 Sakhir GP.
However, the 2020 season would be Perez’s last with the team, now known as Aston Martin. The 35-year-old was dropped in favour of four-time world champion Sebastian Vettel. The Perez camp feels that Lawrence Stroll and the board’s move was a “betrayal” after Perez had helped keep the team afloat.
Sergio Perez was betrayed by Racing Point, according to his father
Sergio Perez had a great 2020 season, where he finished fourth in the standings and won his first grand prix. However, this wasn’t enough for Racing Point to keep him on. Perez’s father, Antonio, believes Racing Point betrayed the Mexican, but it helped build him into the racer we know today.
Speaking to Formula de Dos podcast, Antonio Perez said: “I remember Checo saved the team when it went bankrupt. But then they paid him back with this betrayal. Then you say: ‘wow.’ All sorts of things happened to Checo along the way, to eventually become Checo Perez as we know him today.”
Despite feeling betrayed, this move by Racing Point helped Perez’s career trajectory. The 35-year-old joined Red Bull to become a multiple race winner and help the Austrian team to two constructors’ world championships. However, Perez left Red Bull at the end of the 2024 season, so what now for the Mexican?
Sergio Perez is linked to the Cadillac seat
Since leaving Red Bull, Sergio Perez has stated he would only return to the grid for a project that “motivates” him. He revealed that since the final race of last season, many teams have contacted the 35-year-old for his services. Latest reports point to him joining the newcomers, Cadillac F1.
According to reports, Perez will be in Miami this weekend, which could mark his first appearance at an F1 event following his departure from Red Bull. Cadillac are set to have a launch event in Miami, and they will hold fresh talks with the Mexican.
Could Cadillac Be Sergio Perez’s Next Destination After Red Bull?
Cadillac are searching for its driver line-up for next season. The new boys will want someone with a great depth of F1 experience to guide their first seasons in the sport. The six-time race winner Perez fits the bill for what the American team will be looking for. He is one of the favourites to join Cadillac and return to the grid after taking a year out.
