F1: The Movie was received well by cinema-goers worldwide and has recorded $393 million to date, making it one of the highest-earning films of the year so far. Seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton helped produce the movie, which starred Brad Pitt, Javier Bardem and Damson Idris.
Hamilton’s role in the movie was to make the on-track action as realistic as possible. The 40-year-old also made a cameo appearance in the film, along with many other drivers. Despite the movie doing well at the box office and receiving good reviews, Hamilton says a sequel is not currently on the cards.
Lewis Hamilton says there’s no rush for a sequel to F1: The Movie
F1: The Movie has received mainly positive reviews from cinema-goers. However, many fans of the film will be disappointed to hear that a sequel is not already in the works. Lewis Hamilton believes it is too soon to “rush” into a sequel.
Speaking to the media, he said: “I saw someone talk about it, but we literally just finished it, so I think the last thing we want right now is a sequel. It’s been four years in the making, it was a lot of work, particularly for Joe [Kosinski, director].”

“I think the worst thing we probably could do is to rush into doing a sequel. Most sequels are way worse, so we don’t need to rush it. I think if we do a sequel, I would say let’s really, really take our time in getting it even better.”
“I think, right now, it’s about – which I don’t know if they’ve ever done before – but I’ve asked them to do a debrief. So let’s review what we did, what we could have done better. I don’t know if they ever do that in the movie business, but it’s something obviously I’ve learned from here and so I’m just trying to apply that to future programmes that I do.”
Hamilton has left it open for the film to have a second part of the story. F1 is hitting a peak amongst its fandom, which will only gather momentum with Cadillac joining the grid. This will bring more American fans to the sport, with three races already hosted in the country.
How F1 fans reacted to Lewis Hamilton’s announcement
Some F1 fans were pleased to hear that a sequel was not on the cards anytime soon. Although the movie was a success, it took four years to plan and make. Rushing in could undo the impact the movie made.
One fan wrote: “Interesting to see Hamilton urging caution. Rushing could compromise authenticity and impact.”

Other fans cited that other racing films, like Le Mans, didn’t have a sequel despite doing well at the box office.
I wouldn’t push it. We all thought it was very good.
Keep in mind, “LeMans” did not have a sequel 👍

Opinions are divided amongst fans who want the racing brought back to the big screen. However, rushing such a complex movie cannot be rushed, and Hamilton has said, moving quickly into a sequel could ruin the franchise. Would you like to see a sequel to F1: The Movie?
