Belgian GP Set for Mayhem as McLaren Start 1-2 Amid Threat of Rain

We are only a few hours out from the start of the Belgian GP which has seen a variety of drivers top sessions so far. Piastri took the Sprint Pole on Friday, Verstappen won the Sprint race, and later that day Norris took Pole Position for the main event.

However, we could see someone else entirely rise to the top as today’s weather has come into play with buckets and buckets of rain hitting the track. So far today, we have seen Formula 3 and Formula 2 have their respective feature races. While they had wildly different outcomes, the only conclusion we can make is that Formula 1 is set for an absolute spectacle of a Belgian GP.

What are the expectations following Qualifying on Saturday?

During qualifying, we saw Lando Norris speed to pole position, followed by teammate Oscar Piastri and Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc. Nothing new at the front of the grid. What we haven’t seen this year, however, is both Red Bull and Racing Bull cars in Q3. For the first time this season all 4 Red Bull driver’s have slotted into the top 10. Is this the first glimpse of the new Red Bull era under its renewed leadership?

On the other end of the grid, however, we have some big names. Lewis Hamilton failed to make it out of Q1 for the second time this weekend, as he marks the Belgian weekend as ‘one to forget’. The 7-time world champion had his lap time deleted after going to P7 at the end of Q1.

Mercedes driver Kimi Antonelli also has not had the greatest time around the legendary Spa circuit, as he too failed to escape Q1 for the second time this weekend. An elimination that saw the Italian rookie get emotional in front of F1 media after the session.

Despite these disappointing results though, these drivers will make the most out of it as both of them took new engines, changed the setup and will start from pit lane to give themselves the best shot at success in a likely wet Spa race. They will be joined in the pit lane by Fernando Alonso who qualified 19th and took the same changes as Hamilton and Antonelli and finally Sainz who changed aero parts outside of Parc Fèrme.

Predictions for the Belgian Grand Prix

Both Formula 3 and Formula 2 were plagued by the wet weather that Spa threw at them. F3 saw the Feature race being cancelled after several attempts with only two laps completed behind the safety car before time ran out. No points were awarded for that race.

Formula 2, on the other hand, was a little luckier. A full race was completed in wet conditions with poor visibility. Several drivers had major difficulties going through the Eau Rouge/Radillion combination, with Montoya spinning out of the race there. This promises a difficult event ahead for the Formula 1 field.

With Norris and Piastri lining up 1-2 for the race, we could see some amazing wheel to wheel action early on. There’s no doubt that Leclerc and Verstappen will challenge the McLaren pair if they leave them any room. Further back we have a really mixed grid that leaves the race in a state of uncertainty and excitement.

The real question we have to ask though is will we see a proper battle between the McLaren pair this race. only 9 points separate them in the championship at the moment and the races start ticking down as we have crossed the halfway point of the 2025 season. Will the championship contenders finally take off the kid gloves? Will we see them fight at the limit during what promises to be a tough race with changing conditions?

Additionally while rain is ever present, we could very well see the slicks used during this race. The Porsche Super cup race saw a distinct dry line formed throughout their session. If rain doesn’t fall intensely then the F1 race changes completely. What do you think the Belgian GP looks like? Wet? Wet to dry? Dry to wet? Leave all your prediction in the comments.
