What Is a Grand Slam in F1? Breaking Down One of the Most Dominant Achievements in Motorsport

Winning an F1 race is always a great feeling for a driver. However, when you have such a dominant car and drivers are winning multiple races, sometimes, how they win is important to them.

Drivers want to break records, and one of the great achievements is securing a grand slam during a race weekend. But what is a grand slam in F1?

What is an F1 grand slam?

A grand slam, also known as a grand chelem, in F1 is when a driver has taken pole position, won the race, set the fastest lap, and led every lap. Throughout the entire sports history, only 27 drivers have managed to achieve this feat.

It is the most dominant achievement an F1 driver can record. However, they fail to score any extra points for scoring a grand slam, so it is just for personal pride and to break records.

The first F1 driver to record a grand slam was Juan Manuel Fangio, with the former five-time world champion achieving it at the 1950 Monaco GP. At the time of writing, the last driver to score a grand chelem was Oscar Piastri at the 2025 Dutch GP.

Which F1 drivers hold the record for the most grand slams?

The former two-time Jim Clark holds the record for the most grand slams in F1 history. The 25-time race winner has eight grand slams recorded to his name, with his first being at the 1962 British GP, and his final at the 1965 German GP.

Seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton is second on the list, having six grand slams to his name. Over his illustrious career, the Brit first recorded a grand slam at the 2014 Malaysian GP. At the time of writing, his final was at the 2019 Abu Dhabi GP.

Four-time world champion Max Verstappen is one behind with five, at the time of writing. He first achieved a grand slam at the 2021 Austrian GP, with his final accomplishment being the 2024 Bahrain GP. He is joint third on the list with other legends of the sport, Michael Schumacher and Alberto Ascari.
