‘He Definitely Has It’ – Toto Wolff Defends Lewis Hamilton Amid Tough Ferrari Start, Backs Big Comeback

During his short stint at Ferrari so far, Lewis Hamilton has seen more difficulties than successes. Following a few really demotivating weekends for the 7-time world champion, he suggested in a recent interview that Ferrari should ‘change the driver’. While the Brit himself is very down on his luck as of recent, Toto Wolff has come in to offer some advice and comfort.

During the Hungarian Grand Prix, Lewis Hamilton failed to reach Q3 after a really tight field caused him to lose out. This happened while his teammate Charles Leclerc managed to put his Ferrari on Pole Position for the main event on Sunday. In the media pen after qualifying, Lewis seemed lost for words over the recent slump in pace.

Lewis Hamilton’s recent results are not a reflection of his skills

After a disappointing qualifying session in Hungary, Hamilton had to face the media. In a trend we saw over the last few races, Lewis starts to lose confidence in himself as he is constantly outperformed by his teammate and is struggling to find the pace in the car. He then quite literally stated that he is ‘useless’ and ‘Ferrari should consider changing the driver’.

While Hamilton can’t seem to stay very positive after his recent results, Toto Wolff, who has worked with him for nearly a decade, has a different opinion:

“That is Lewis wearing his heart on his sleeve. It’s what he thought very much when he was asked after the session was very raw. He was doubting himself, and we had it in the past.”

‘Don’t Count Me Out’ – Lewis Hamilton Sends Powerful Message After Gruelling Start to 2025 F1 Season

“When he felt that he had underperformed his own expectations, and the team had its own goal, he’s been that emotional, emotionally transparent since he was a young boy, a young adult. So, he’s going to beat himself up. He’s the GOAT. And he will always be the GOAT, and nobody’s going to take that away. For sure, no single weekend or race season that hasn’t gone to plan.”

Wolff and Hamilton have remained good friends since the latter left the team for Ferrari. However, you can definitely see that Toto has full confidence that Hamilton will get back on top at some point in the future.

The end of the Hamilton era of Formula 1?

With this level of negativity to his results, one can only wonder if Hamilton is considering leaving the sport for something fresh and new. While Hamilton himself hasn’t commented on this matter, Toto Wolff has a clear opinion on the World Champion’s future plans and whether they include F1:

“Lewis has unfinished business in Formula 1. In the same way that Mercedes underperformed over this latest set of regulations since 2022, he kind of never got happy with ground effect cars, in the same way, it beats him. Maybe it’s linked to driving style.”

‘Big Struggle’ – Lewis Hamilton Admits Brutal Hungarian GP Practice With Unpredictable Ferrari

“So, he shouldn’t go anywhere. Next year, brand new cars, completely different to drive, new power units that need an intelligent way of managing the energy.”

Despite the recent troubles that have plagued Hamilton in his quest for glory with Ferrari, new opportunities are about to open up as F1 enters its next era of competition. With new rules, engines, and teams in the mix, we could see Lewis Hamilton in the mix in 2026 and beyond.

With Hamilton’s passion for racing still showing on the track, it’s a no brainer to say he will stay in F1 for the near future. It’s difficult to imagine the sport without one of its biggest talents. However, what position he will be fighting for next year is obviously something we will have to wait for.
