Helmut Marko Praises Liam Lawson Despite Spat With Sergio Perez

The Red Bull family is known for its revolving door of drivers. In the past few years, we have seen multiple drivers step up, step down, and leave the team. One of those drivers is Liam Lawson. After driving in place of Daniel Ricciardo last year, he has been waiting in the wings for his chance.

Ricciardo’s last race in Formula 1 was the Singaporean Grand Prix. After that, Lawson stepped in. Lawson has not been confirmed for VCARB/Red Bull next year. However, Lawson has been impressing the senior figures and scoring points thus helping his bid for a 2025 seat.

Liam Lawson’s impressive performance at the Mexican GP

Liam Lawson has impressed the Red Bull team with his performances so far. At his first race this season, he scored within the points coming in 9th place at the United States Grand Prix. Despite not placing in the points at the Mexican Grand Prix, he still outranked both his VCARB teammate Yuki Tsunoda but also senior Red Bull driver, Sergio Perez.

During the race, Lawson had also managed to put in the fastest lap. However, Perez pitted in an attempt to do the same. He did not manage to hold on long enough as Charles Leclerc pitted with two laps to go and took it away from both of them. In only two races, Lawson has put himself into the World Drivers’ Championship standings outranking both Kick Sauber drivers already.

Is Liam Lawson next in line to replace Sergio Perez?

On the topic of Sergio Perez, Helmut Marko acknowledged that Perez had a bad weekend. He said that “elimination in the first qualifying segment is very disappointing” regardless of qualifying not being one of Perez’s strengths. In the past two races, Lawson has asserted his dominance and is shaking up the Red Bull family.

Helmut Marko mentioned that he feels as if VCARB driver Yuki Tsunoda is making mistakes because of Lawson. Reflecting on Tsunoda’s race, Marko said that Tsunoda was feeling “the pressure of Lawson, otherwise, [the] mistake(s) cannot be explained”.

Between Tsunoda and Lawson’s last two races, Lawson currently looks like Marko’s favorite to replace Perez. Marko went on to write that “Liam Lawson has proven his qualities and confirmed the trust placed in him”.

Could we see Liam Lawson promoted to Red Bull before Yuki Tsunoda? If Lawson gets promoted despite less than a year’s experience, do you think Tsunoda will move teams?
