The 2025 season so far has been dominated by the McLaren team, with drivers Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris leading the charge for the Driver’s Title. No other driver is coming even close to mounting a challenge. However, the intra-team battle is getting more and more interesting.
Only 10 rounds are remaining of the 24-race season, and the current gap between the McLaren pair is only 9 points. Points are getting scarce, and every mistake can become costly as the two drivers are just about matched on pace. Guenther Steiner has commented on how the championship has gone and will go as we are about to enter the final stages of F1 in 2025.
Consistency is key in Formula 1
During a recent episode of The Red Flags Podcast, Former Team Principal of Haas, Guenther Steiner has commented on the battle between the McLarens. Talking about what could’ve been had Norris not collided with Piastri back in Canada:
“If Lando wouldn’t do his little mistakes, which I always say. Canada, if he would have been patient and stayed second, guess where he would be? Leading the World Championship!”
Lando Norris Says Perfectionism Is Both Driving and Hindering His Success
We have seen Norris make little mistakes all throughout the 2025 season, whether it’s crashing in Q3 back in Saudi Arabia or losing the lead in Spa following the rolling race start where he went wide out of turn 1 and lost the traction race all the way to turn 5.
These ‘mistakes’ don’t cost much, but they add up throughout a season. 10 points here, 7 points there. While Piastri might just not have the pace on some days, he is the most consistent driver of 2025, and the standings reflect that.
Steiner backs Piastri for the 2025 world title
With the number of remaining races quickly ticking down, the fight for the driver’s title might come down to the wire. Guenther Steiner has commented on why he thinks Piastri will be the one to end out on top.
While Steiner is aware of Norris’ most recent results (3 race wins in the last 4 races), he is still sceptical of putting the Brit ahead of Piastri when the final results are concerned. The opinion that Lando tends to fold under pressure is harsh but not unfounded, as we have seen him make silly mistakes that influenced his final race results.
When it all comes down to the final points, we will have to see which McLaren driver is willing to take the most risk for victory. If the title fight isn’t over when F1 enters Abu Dhabi, we could see a Verstappen-Hamilton-like finale where the gloves are off and every lap is driven at the absolute top of their game. Who do you think will win the world title in 2025? Norris, Piastri, or can some other driver make the comeback of all time?
