Jack Doohan: Take a Look at Alpine’s New Youngster

Alpine arrived in Monaco having scored just one point in the season. Their drivers lined up on the grid with Pierre Gasly in tenth and Esteban Ocon in eleventh. Points looked good for the struggling team but it got tougher when the two drivers collided on the first lap.

Ocon was deemed at fault for the collision, and a week later, it was announced he would be leaving the team he had spent five years at. Looking for a replacement, Alpine promoted their reserve driver Jack Doohan.

Where is Jack Doohan from?

Jack Doohan, aged 21, is from Gold Coast in Australia. His father, Mick Doohan, is a five-time Moto GP world champion. Jack began karting at age nine after he was gifted a kart from seven-time world champion Michael Schumacher.

Doohan originally signed for the Red Bull junior program in 2017 but left the Austrian team after the 2021 season ended. He then joined the Alpine Academy and will become the first driver from their academy to drive for the team in F1 in 2025.

Doohan’s performance in the junior categories

Jack Doohan performed well while learning his trade. He debuted in open-wheel racing in the 2018 F4 British Championship, where he secured three wins on his way to fifth in the standings. He didn’t fare as well in the Italian F4 championship, though, as he only scored nine points in six races.

The 2019 season saw Doohan make more of a name for himself. After winning five races, he came second in the F3 Asian Championship. He also secured two podiums in the Euroformula Open Championship but could only manage eleventh place.

2020 saw Doohan take the step up to F3. However, this season did not go well. He failed to score a point while his teammate Jake Hughes recorded two wins and finished fifth in the standings. His second year in F3 produced much better results, as he challenged for the championship, falling short by 26 points.

Jack Doohan’s impressive record in F2

Doohan joined F2 with only two rounds left of the 2021 season. He managed eight points in the six races and impressed enough to earn a seat for the following season. The 2022 season saw him perform well as he secured three wins and six podiums, finishing sixth in the tables.

Doohan recovered from a poor start to the 2023 season. He finished third in the standings, with three victories in the final five race weekends propelling him up the field. He also became the reserve driver for Alpine in 2023.

Jack Doohan’s F1 experience

After joining the Alpine Academy in 2022, he was given opportunities to drive the 2021 car in various test sessions across the season. He made his FP1 debut in Mexico and completed a further session in Abu Dhabi. The 2023 season saw him drive in the FP1 sessions in Mexico and Abu Dhabi once more.

The 2024 season saw Doohan drive in two more FP1 sessions, this time in Canada and Britain. However, he was given his chance to show off his skills when Alpine confirmed he would replace Ocon for the final race of the season in Abu Dhabi. He qualified last and finished fifteenth.
