Lando Norris won the Monaco GP last time out to close the gap to McLaren teammate Oscar Piastri, who leads the championship. A week later, all eyes will turn to Barcelona, which will host the Spanish GP for the last time until at least 2035.
With the title fight looking to have three main protagonists, with Max Verstappen chasing down the McLaren duo, this weekend will provide an answer to the question: Is McLaren exploiting flexi-wings to improve their pace?
New flexi-wing tests might impact the pecking order at the Spanish GP
From Barcelona onwards, the FIA will impose stricter tests on flexible front wings. Last season, the row erupted at the Azerbaijan GP. McLaren was accused of using a ‘mini-DRS’ in their rear wing, giving them extra straight-line speed. The row continued in pre-season testing, and the FIA acted, introducing tougher tests on flexible bodywork.
Rear wings were given stringent testing from the outset. However, front wings would be given tough testing from round 9 in Barcelona. Teams were notified during the winter, so they could have been preparing for this new directive. However, those still using flexible front wings could be caught out.
F1 Team Bosses Discuss Flexi-Wings Changes Before Spanish GP
McLaren is adamant that their car is fast despite using flexible bodywork. They still expect to be towards the front of the timing sheets. However, this weekend, we are diving into an unknown where this new directive is described as a “new regulation” by Christian Horner. Teams like Ferrari, who haven’t been capitalising on flexible bodywork, might find themselves battling for top honours. This race could throw up a few surprises.
Title fight intensifying before Spanish GP
The result in Monaco meant Lando Norris closed in on Oscar Piastri by ten points. The gap at the top is now just three points, with Max Verstappen still within touching distance, 25 points behind.
With McLaren currently the fastest car, it is expected that Norris and Piastri will battle it out in Barcelona for the race win. However, with the tougher tests on the front wings, Red Bull might fancy themselves to close the gap to the Woking-based team.
Monaco Win Resets Lando Norris for Championship Battle With Teammate
We got a taste of Norris and Piastri battling in Monza last season. Piastri raced his British teammate hard to overtake into the second chicane. This cost Norris the win and a chance to close the gap to Verstappen. This season, the pair are yet to fight on equal terms, something F1 fans are relishing to see.
