Aston Martin has been hiring top personnel to help them reach the top of Formula 1 and challenge for world championships. They have already created new facilities which the team hopes will be a “game changer.“. They have also added one of the best minds in the sport, Adrian Newey.
Newey officially embarked on his new journey today following his departure from Red Bull. He had been with the Austrian team since its conception but decided he was ready for a new challenge. He will aim to get Aston Martin fighting at the front of the field, but how will he do that?
What will Adrian Newey’s role be at Aston Martin?
After it was announced in September 2024 that Adrian Newey would join Aston Martin, he was given the position of Managing Technical Partner. Aston Martin says the F1 design legend will lead the team’s 2026 car developments due to the new regulations coming in that year.
The 66-year-old supremo will spend five years with the Silverstone-based team, meaning from 2026, the car will be in his image. This is big for Aston Martin, who have struggled to reach the heights of the 2023 season. Fernando Alonso finished 4th in the championship as Aston Martin came out of the blocks firing as the Spaniard recorded four podiums in the first five races.

With Newey’s input and design mind, Aston Martin could become a force in the sport. He has previously worked wonders with teams, dragging them to the top of the field. His design helped Williams win five Constructors’ Championships in the 1990s. He also helped Red Bull have two periods of domination in the early 2010s and with Max Verstappen in 2021, and it is still ongoing.
There is little surprise at the optimism around Aston Martin with the arrival of Newey. He leads teams to championships and designs fast cars. His arrival is perfect with the new regulations. With little known on how each team will cope, Aston Martin could have a very bright future ahead.
Adrian Newey and Fernando Alonso wanted to work together
Adrian Newey admitted one of the reasons he joined Aston Martin was that he wanted to work with two-time world champion Fernando Alonso. He said: “I’ve made no secret of the fact I wanted to work with Fernando.”.

Alonso himself wanted Newey to join Aston Martin and says he tried to persuade the design legend to join. He said: “I texted him, for sure, like everybody did probably, that wanted to work with him. We all tried to persuade him.” Alonso also believes that with Newey at the helm, Aston Martin could become the team of the future.
Alonso himself is 43 years old. However, the Spaniard is not driving like that. He is still on top of his game. If Newey and his teams can get the car right, Alonso has the skills to take his Aston Martin into a position where he can challenge for a title. The prospect is exciting for Aston Martin, but can they deliver?
