Aston Martin Ready for Stroll Absence: Potential Replacement Confirmed for Canada

Lance Stroll’s absence in the Spanish Grand Prix was caused by a previous injury from 2023. Just a few weeks after a serious bicycle incident, he was back in his Aston Martin racing at full speed. This decision could very well come back to haunt him as he seems to have been in serious pain for a large part of the 2025 season.

Stroll had a very nice start to the 2025 campaign but failed to score after round 2 in China. His race results have seen him at the back of the grid while his teammate was running close to or in the top 10.

After qualifying for the Spanish GP in 14th place, Stroll was downbeat and reached a breaking point. This resulted in the team withdrawing him for the race and looking for a replacement for the Canadian GP weekend in 13 days.

Felipe Drugovich opens up on Formula 1 debut opportunity

Felipe Drugovich is the reserve driver for Aston Martin, and he performs a significant amount of work in the background while also competing in other series. He would be the first guy to call up for a replacement if one of the team drivers couldn’t race. However, Drugovich will be competing during this year’s 24 Hours of Le Mans and thus unavailable for that weekend. The same goes for other reserve driver Stoffel Vandoorne.

Felipe Drugovich Could Skip Le Mans If F1 Opportunity Arises

Drugovich has opened up to reporter Thiago Fagnani from Band on this dilemma:

“At the moment, I don’t even know exactly how things will happen from now on. First of all, we have to wish Lance the best. For Le Mans, in that regard, my priority has always been Formula 1, so that’s what must be maintained until then.”

With these quotes, it becomes increasingly more likely that Drugovich could step up to Formula 1 for the next Grand Prix weekend.

Lance Stroll’s recovery period is uncertain as F1 heads to Canada

There are a lot of moving parts in the decision of whether a driver may race in Formula 1. Among these are safety tests and the medical team giving the all-clear. A fast recovery might enable Stroll to get back on time, but that doesn’t matter if he doesn’t receive the all-clear from the FIA and his doctors.

After the bicycle incident in 2023 before the pre-season tests, Stroll only recovered for 15 days before competing in the first race of that season, finishing 6th. Given that it is those injuries that have caused him so much pain right now, it could be a good thing to sit out the next race in Canada.
