The 2008 Singapore Grand Prix was the first night race in Formula 1, but it became infamous due to the crashgate scandal that shook the sport to its core. Renault driver Nelson Piquet Jr. deliberately crashed his car to help his teammate, Fernando Alonso. This led to severe consequences for the principal, Flavio Briatore and others involved.
The incident highlighted the lengths some teams were willing to go to gain an advantage, even if it meant manipulating the outcome of a race. It also raised questions about the integrity of the sport, as fans and drivers alike grappled with the idea that a F1 race could be deliberately influenced behind the scenes.
How did Crashgate unfold?
Piquet Jr. crashed on lap 15, which brought out the safety car. This timing was spot on for Alonso, who had pitted early and moved up the order as other drivers pitted under safety car conditions. Alonso went on to win the race, but the unusual circumstances made people suspicious.

At first, Piquet Jr. blamed the crash on a mistake. But after Renault dropped him in 2009, he confessed that they’d told him to crash on purpose to help Alonso win. This led to an FIA investigation, which uncovered a conspiracy involving team officials.
Alonso insisted he knew nothing about the plan and escaped without any penalties, but his victory was still a bit of a talking point. The incident also impacted Felipe Massa, who was leading the championship at the time. He later filed a lawsuit claiming the manipulated race cost him the 2008 title.
From Bans to Comebacks: The Aftermath
The FIA gave Renault a two-year suspended ban. Flavio Briatore got a lifetime ban from FIA-sanctioned events, and engineering director Pat Symonds got a five-year ban. However, both bans were later overturned by a French court, which ruled that there had been some procedural issues.
In a surprising turn of events, Flavio Briatore is back as the acting team principal of Alpine, the modern-day successor of Renault’s F1 operation. Although he’s officially listed as an executive advisor, Briatore has taken over as a team principal following Oliver Oakes’ departure.
Flavio Briatore Denies Involvement on Crashgate Scandal: ‘Piquet and I Never Even Talked’
Pat Symonds has also come back to F1 in a senior role. He was the F1 Chief Technical Officer until May 2024, when he was in charge of the technical regulations. After stepping down, he joined the Andretti Cadillac F1 project as an executive engineering consultant, helping the team prepare for their entry in 2026.
Nelson Piquet Jr., the driver at the center of Crashgate, never really recovered in F1 from that. After leaving the sport, he raced in Formula E, where he became the first champion in 2014-15. Since then, he has taken a step back from top-level motorsport, racing in endurance events now and then.
Crashgate was one of the most shocking incidents in Formula 1 history. It showed how far teams will go to win.
